Will He or Won’t He?
Dear Mr. Groundhog,
You should see your shadow today, we need the rain for a few more weeks. Please crawl back into your hole and let the rain fall.
Mr. & Ms. Steelhead
Ground Hog Day
Today, according to American folklore and hollywood movies, the groundhog runs the show. Today, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from his burrow, then spring will come early. However, if it’s sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, it will crawl back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.
It’s tough call on how you might wish for this one to go down. Here in Southern Oregon, where we don’t even have groundhogs, we’ve been enduring a severe drought for three years. Despite the fact we may be wishing for some sunshine, we really do need six more weeks of winter and snow in the mountains. Sorry folks, in the mascot battle of what the Pennsylvania groundhog wants, verses what the mighty steelhead needs we pick the steelhead. The steelhead needs some solid snow pack to keep our rivers and lakes full this summer.
