A Lil Christmas Competition
We like to have a good time while we work hard here at Steelhead Finance. We deemed this last week the official festive office decorating contest. I (Rich) oversee the sales office and so once I heard anything about a competition I knew it was time to get serious. I told the team if they lost they would be cleaning toilets. They wondered if I was really that mean. I’m not but I didn’t want them to have to find out. Let’s get to planning. Where do we find the fake snow machine? Forget fake snow… who will go get real snow from up in the mountains and lay it out in our office so the judges can make snow angels?
Okay… we didn’t get the real or fake snow but three different departments didn’t hold back to appease the judges. We, here in the sales office saw Underwriting had wrapped a pillar with tinsel and garland so we wrapped three pillars in tinsel and garland. We saw the reindeer stable theme in operations so we thought we needed a warmer theme… Christmas Morning.
We set out an adult beverage and cookies (bribes work), cast accent up-lighting on the multiple Christmas trees, set out a fancy train set to go around the primary tree, set up two fireplaces, we set up a large TV to play a loop of snowfall as if you were looking out the window. We even laid out the books on sales and growing a company (if bribes will work then sucking up to the leaders who are judges is sure to work as well).
We knew we had competition when operations was serving fresh baked cookies (much better than the store-bought Grandma’s Cookies I set out) and wrapped everything up with Christmas paper. We got slightly nervous when underwriting built a gingerbread house with the Steelhead logo on it. If I built a gingerbread house it would look like Hansel and Gretel tried to burn it down.
We kept two aces we played for judgment day. First, we designed a light-bright style version of our fish logo. Surely ridiculous points were in order from the judge Bill (the president). Second, we recorded a custom Steelhead version of The Night Before Christmas that played when everyone came in. Sí, it was also very awesome.
It was official. Christmas had vomited itself all over our office and it made me happy. No more setting up the standard single tree in the lobby. The new tradition will live on and will get better and better each year… while year one will be tough to beat. Next year… I’ll work on getting Will Farrell to dress up as Buddy the Elf.

We, here at Steelhead want to embody the true meaning of the season… collecting the first place trophy. But seriously, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
