Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 in Virginia. He was the third of ten children. He went on to become a major organizer in the American Revolution. He was the main author of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and was the third President of the United States.
As President he sent out the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the American West and find a trade route to the Pacific Ocean. Later he led the expansion of the United States in one of the largest land purchase ever made, the Louisiana Purchase. The USA bought 828,000 square mile region west of the Mississippi River from France for $.42/acre.
Through his words and leadership he changed the American identity throughout his life, from that of a British colonist, to being a free people with inalienable rights, to a visionary dream of nation that extended westward to the Pacific.
Talk about a man with big ideas! Dream big people, dream big.
