Fly it high today! Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on this day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Betsy Ross is rumored to have sewn the first American Flag with 13 five pointed stars in a circle, representing the founding thirteen colonies. As states were added to the union, the arrangement of stars changed many times from circles to a pattern of stars, to blocks of stars.
Today the red, white, and blue still has 13 stripes to represent the original colonies and 50 stars are equal to the number states that make up the United States.
